All We Need on a Cold Autumn Night

Take a crack at where this was shot.

How well do you really know your hometown? If you've been here a few years and get out of the house much, this scene might look pretty familiar. Can you pinpoint its location? Add a comment at the bottom of this story and you might win.

Each weekend, Novato Patch will take a photo in town and ask you to tell us where it was taken. Be specific; just mentioning a neighborhood or general area like Old Town, Black Point or Ignacio is not specific enough. Pinpoint it as much as you can. The winner really has to nail it.

A new stipulation on this weekly contest: Patch readers are eligible to win once every three months.

If you know the answer, enlighten everybody else by sharing your knowledge about it in the comments section of this story. Even after the correct answer is given, you can add to the conversation if you have the inside scoop on the details or history of that spot.

What's at stake? The first responder with a correct and specific answer gets a prize from the face of Novato Patch. Also, make sure to e-mail the editor at brent.ainsworth@patch.com so you can arrange a meeting to get the prize. Or it can be popped in the mail.

Think you know where this is? Add a comment below. Take a crack at it!

Isn't it the buildings behind Novato Lumber, at Olive and Railroad Ave.?
Mark Burnham November 17, 2012 at 09:52 pm
The building right next to Han's Automotive. It would be great to get a little history on that sign Brent.. I've always wondered.. Let us know if you can.

It's the Pearl Heat and Oil painted on sign on the building at the southwest corner of Olive Avenue and Railroad Ave, west of the NWP tracks. I'll have the street address shortly.
Jerry Peters November 18, 2012 at 03:01 pm
OK the street address is 815 Olive Avenue, in beautiful Novato, CA. And yes, Brent tell us the story about that sign and the building. Does that sign have something to do with the movie that was shot in Novato years ago?
Brent Ainsworth (Editor) November 18, 2012 at 03:47 pm
I'm going to award Mark with this week's prize because he mentioned Hans by name. Plus, Susan just won recently and a person can win only once per three-month period. I have emailed Hans Eide to ask about the origin of the sign and I'll share that info as soon as he gets back to me (or if he decides to chime in on this conversation). Meantime I am adding another photo and a locator map for those who are unfamiliar with this location. Mark, drop me an email so we can connect for your prize.

While waiting for Hans to respond, have a look here: http://www.chevron.com/about/history/1912/ . As a retired Chevroid, I've always thought the sign related to a Chevron product of many years ago.

This was emailed to me by someone who attended. So many Bay Area Residents oppose Governments PlanRead More Bay Area.
Tina McMillan June 17, 2013 at 11:08 am
Susan thank you for posting this. Chris Pareja is an articulate speaker whose message needs to beRead More acknowledged. While community activists claim Plan Bay Area is the answer Chris uses their own statistics to point out how little is accomplished and the real hypocrisy behind advocates claims that it will provide "equity". Chris attended the Plan Bay Area Debate at the Civic Center and spoke there as well. Kinsey completely ignored his comments and kept repeating the party line: Plan Bay Area is the only answer we have so it is "good enough." Anyone who hasn't yet should take the time to watch the debate as it is a real eye opener. Kinsey's responses are quite disconcerting if he is being touted as the local expert on Plan Bay Area. I was shocked by how little he seems to understand. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOE7Hyd5B40&feature=youtu.be

Hi Jim. Thanks for clarifying . Most of us assumed you were the new Novato Patch editor.
Jim Welte (Editor) June 17, 2013 at 10:55 am
Which is a fair assumption since my name and face are on it for now. Sorry for the confusion. In theRead More interim, I am more than happy to answer questions or address any concerns about the new design or our coverage of the community.
Tina McMillan June 17, 2013 at 01:03 pm
Jim What is the best way to reach you with questions and offers of help? If there is a way toRead More personalize each Patch to its community that would make a huge difference. Brent would post news articles as the primary focus. The comparison to a "penny saver" is the biggest problem with the new design. It does not favor news which is what many people are interested in. If San Rafael Patch is hosting the Plan Bay Area articles then doesn't it make sense to cross post them to Novato's front page too? Looking for news was never a problem with the old Patch, now finding the news in the middle of the garage sales, ads for businesses and announcements is where many people are stuck. It's unfortunate that Back Bay is the old design. It means corporate is throwing out what was the best of Patch. Is there anyone to write to, to suggest that the changes in format are not supportive of a online news source?
