Students Prepare Auditions and Applications for Marin Summer Theater

Auditions for Award Winning Theater Company on March 15, 22 and 29

Students from all over the Bay Area and beyond are working hard as they prepare to audition for Marin Summer Theater, the award winning student theater company based in Novato.  Auditions for the 2014 MST Company are on March 15, 22 and 29 at San Marin High School.   MST is open to students of the performing arts between the ages of 13 and 23. Audition slots are still available for all dates, but filling fast.

In just five years, Marin Summer Theater has become one of the top student theater companies in the state, winning seven BroadwayWorld.com SF awards for its 2013 season and four National Youth Arts awards for its 2012 season.   MST received more 2013 BroadwayWorld.com SF awards than any other Northern or Central California theater company, and swept the Best Actor and Best Actress categories.  Even before the awards, MST had earned a reputation as a high-caliber theater company, attracting applicants from all over the country.

“The number one thing I want to see in an audition is who you are as a performer” says Pat Nims, MST Artistic Director.  “We cast a season of shows and need a wide variety of people and types.  I look for dedication, talent and the willingness to take risks.  Show me what you do best, with a piece that you love to perform”.

Melissa Anderson, director of ANYTHING GOES, says, “Go in with something to give, not to get. I’m always looking for what an actor has to offer.” She also notes that preparation before an audition is key. “You want to walk in the room with an energized relaxation.  Remember that we want you to be great!”

Former stage manager for Marin Theater Company, Ali Wuerfel, commends the people that she got to work with in her two seasons with MST, “Everyone in the program is so welcoming and willing to help you learn. It’s a great work experience with a wonderful group of talented people.” She stresses that it’s important to be yourself, “and obviously try your best and break a leg!”

Fernando Siu, also a MST alum says, “Pat and Emily keep the process clean, calm, and welcoming, which helps everyone immensely. It just lets everyone breathe and really focus on their monologues and songs. Not only that, but when they talk to you after your audition they make you feel like you did something spectacular, and they create this personal relationship with you.”

MST is also accepting applications for student stage technicians, crew and musicians.  “Tech and live music is incredibly important to MST.  Without our talented and hardworking crews and instrumentalists, MST would not be where it is today” said Nims.

Auditions for the MST 2014 Company are on March 15th, 22rd, and 29th by appointment only.  Performers, technicians and musicians can sign up online at marinsummertheater.org, and get details on the schedule and the season.  In addition to the live auditions, performers can submit video auditions.  All applications are due no later than March 29th.
