Intensity Builds in Final Weeks of Congressional Campaign

Huffman considered favorite in 12-candidate race for Woolsey's seat.

As we reported last month in Patch, the 2nd District North Coast Congressional race started out strong and has continued to build in intensity. Voters in the June 5 primary election will narrow the field of 12 candidates down to the top two, who will then compete in the November general elections to represent the 2nd District in Congress. Three Democratic contenders continue to be the favorites — State Assemblyman Jared Huffman, entrepreneur Stacey Lawson and peace activist Norman Solomon — but the Santa Rosa Press Democrat is reporting that Huffman, of San Rafael, is considered the favorite, based partly on his $865,000 in campaign funding. All three of the top candidates have strong endorsements, according to the article. Huffman is …

Donahue Stops in Petaluma to Campaign for Solomon

Former TV talk show host says you don't have to be a tough guy to win

Although it’s been off the air for more than a decade, the Phil Donahue Show was revived Monday in Petaluma as its charismatic host campaigned for Norman Solomon, who is running to replace the retiring Rep. Lynn Woolsey in in the new Second Congressional District. Solomon, a West Marin anti-war activist and author, has been successful at capturing attention thus far in the campaign, recruiting Sean Penn for a Q&A session and making an attempt to live on food stamps. Solomon’s message of not taking any corporate cash is resonating with some voters, as well as his strong opposition to wars in the Middle East. Donahue hosted a national syndicated talk show for nearly 30 years and is considered one of the country's most well-known and …

Unlike Adams and Huffman, Solomon continues to act as if serving in congress means he will have power without boundaries. If he is more interested in local issues perhaps he should run for supervisor as Adam's did or as state congressional rep as Huffman did. These boundaries are in place for a reason. If however, this is just about grandstanding then Solomon has no standing against either Adams …   more ›

Letters to the Editor

Op-Ed: Jeanne MacLeamy Thanks Voters of Novato

Novato City Council member says 'Your input will help me make better-informed and balanced decisions that serve the interests of our entire community.'

The end of the campaign season ushers in this season of Thanksgiving and an opportunity to acknowledge our gratitude for the many blessings around us. We can be grateful for our birthright to vote and grateful for those who participate in our wonderful community. I would personally like to extend my gratitude for the enthusiastic support of my volunteers and to my co-candidates — and the folks they represent — for bringing so many issues and perspectives to the forefront of our collective conversations.  I am so appreciative and grateful to have been entrusted to serve another term on the Novato City Council.  I know that there are residents who did not support me and others who don’t agree with me on every issue. I ask each of you to …

Op-Ed: Thank You from Eric Lucan

Although yet to be sworn in, the new member of the Novato City Council and top vote getter in the Nov. 8 election is gracious for the support.

Thank you, Novato! Having grown up in the wonderful community of Novato, I am deeply honored that you have elected me to the City Council. I am thrilled to give back to a city that has given me so much over the years.   Thank you to all of the residents of Novato for your confidence in my ability to serve on the council. I am overwhelmed by the support I have received.  I also want to say thank you to Jeanne MacLeamy, Madeline Kellner, Leslie Peterson Schwarze, Jerome Ghigliotti, Eleanor Sluis and Manny Fernandez; it was great getting to know each of you on the campaign trail. I have great respect for anyone who is willing to go through the rigors of a campaign.   Finally, thank you to all of my supporters who wrote letters, made phone …

Eric I hope you will take an active role in challenging the council's plan to build city offices in old town. Had the council wanted, this issue could have been put to rest by allowing voters to weigh in. Instead they ignored the heart of measure D and plowed ahead with a plan to spend $16 million dollars. Please read the attached Pac Sun article where Pat Ecklund refers to Measure D: "But the …   more ›

Update: Kellner Widens Lead in City Council Race

Leslie Peterson Schwarze finished just 86 votes behind Madeline Kellner on election night, but the registrar said Thursday the margin has widened to 161 votes.

The final results of Novato City Council race will not be known until thousands of ballots are counted next week, but Mayor Madeline Kellner looks to be in better shape than she was on election night, according to Marin County Registrar of Voters Elaine Ginnold. Fourth-place finisher Leslie Peterson Schwarze, a former school board member, finished 86 votes behind Kellner with all 30 precincts reporting Tuesday night, but Ginnold told the Marin Independent Journal on Thursday that the margin had widened to 161 votes. Peterson Schwarze said she sent congratulatory notes to newcomer and top vote getter Eric Lucan and incumbent Jeanne MacLeamy but doesn't believe it's time to do the same for Kellner. "I think at this point in the process, it’s…

Here we go again with the late night threesome. They have an answer for every problem but one in the world . They can't figure out why Leslie lost and refuse to admit that she changed horses in the middle of the race.   more ›

Lucan No. 1 in City Council Race, Breaks Up All-Woman Quintet

Incumbents MacLeamy and Kellner re-elected; narrow miss for Peterson Schwarze

Hometown man Eric Lucan became the youngest member in the 51-year history of the Novato City Council by not only winning a seat in Tuesday’s election but coming in first among seven candidates. Lucan, a 30-year-old hotel marketing executive, joined incumbents Jeanne MacLeamy and current Mayor Madeline Kellner as the top vote getters in the election, and the three will join Denise Athas and Pat Eklund on the dais at Novato City Hall. Kellner edged another challenger, former school board member Leslie Peterson Schwarze, by just 86 votes in the unofficial tally. Jerome Ghigliotti, who ran on a campaign of eliminating illegal alien gangs and making sure all companies doing contracted work with the city proved that their workers were documented…

Very glad Mr.Lucan prevailed; fear does not overcome an educated electorate...That works in national elections, not local ones. Go Novato, and poverty is "no excuse" for poor character--ever!   more ›

Eva Long Leads Quartet of COM Board Winners

Longtime incumbent garners fifth term; newcomer Stephanie O’Brien joins incumbents Philip Kranenberg and James Namnath.

Three incumbents and one newcomer won the four seats on the College of Marin board in Tuesday’s election, and the leading vote-getter surmised that voters are happy with the board’s work after a period of tumult. “This was a wonderful vote of confidence of the important work we’re doing and which needs to be done,” said incumbent Eva Long, who earned her fourth term on the board. “This was a very solid group of candidates.” Seven candidates sought the four open seats on the board. Long, 69, was joined by 51-year-old San Rafael accountant Philip Kranenberg and 55-year-old former Dominican University and College of Marin chemistry professor James Namnath as incumbents who were re-elected. The trio was joined by Lagunitas School District …
