Public Policy Group Endorses Kellner, MacLeamy, Lucan for Council
North Bay Leadership Council lays out the reasons why two incumbents and a parks commissioner should get votes.
Novato City Council members Madeline Kellner and Jeanne MacLeamy secured endorsements Tuesday for the Nov. 8 council election from the North Bay Leadership Council, and a third nod was given to second-time challenger Eric Lucan.
The organization said it made its recommendations based on experience, balanced approaches on key issues and knowledge and desire to address North Bay challenges.
Lucan, a member of the city’s parks commission and a San Francisco businessman, was narrowly edged by Pat Eklund for a City Council seat two yearas ago. He is challenging for one of three seats this year along with Manny Fernandez, Jerome Ghigliotti, Leslie Peterson Schwarze and Eleanor Sluis.
In an e-mail to Novato Patch, NBLC Executive Director Cynthia Murray helped explain the endorsements by pointing out qualities in each of the three candidates chosen.
“NBLC supports Jeanne MacLeamy because of her proven leadership in managing the city through perilous times, her support for pension reform, her balanced approach to meeting the needs of the people of Novato and her smarts. With Jeanne at the helm, Novato’s residents know that they can count on her to lead Novato with an inclusionary style that produces positive results.
“NBLC endorses Madeline Kellner because of her excellent knowledge in managing large municipal agencies’ budgets and personnel — she has shown that her decisions are based on the city’s overall best interests with an eye toward the long view. Madeline’s thoughtful, steady demeanor and ability to bring the private and public sector together, serve her well in addressing the city’s fiscal crisis and the community’s need for a stronger economy.
“Eric Lucan won the endorsement of NBLC by demonstrating leadership in his many years of service to the people of Novato. Eric is a fiscal conservative with an MBA who understands complex financial operations, which is important as the city navigates it way into a more sustainable budget. We applaud Eric’s commitment to youth in recognition that they are the future of the community and its best asset. Eric’s fresh ideas to how to stimulate the economy and improve its infrastructure will bring jobs and vitality to the community.”
The Petaluma-based North Bay Leadership Council is a coalition of employers in Marin and Sonoma counties and the only employer-led public policy group that represents the North Bay. Led by Murray, a former Novato City Council member and Marin County Board of Supervisors member, the NBLC advocates for a regional perspective when addressing community concerns.
Murray said the NBLC supports candidates that “share the same values on improving education, increasing economic competitiveness, reforming public pensions and making government sustainable within today’s fiscal realities, reducing congestion and creating green transportation alternatives, other sound public policy positions.”

Status quo? No thanks!
Vote Leslie Peterson Schwarze for Novato City Council! The people's candidate!
The good people of Novato are very excited about Leslie, one who will be a critical thinker and fight for the people!
Leslie supports our K-9 program (remember when the city put them on the chopping block for cuts), our School Resource Officers that the city has cut (all 3 of them), supports our successful Gang Graffiti Abatement Program, and will fight with the people against unreasonable state mandates and fight for local control.
We need someone who is pro Novato Public Schools on council and that is Leslie. Everything the city does affects our schools.
The Schwarze campaign is doing fabulous! Let me know if you would like a lawn sign! The reorder juct came in!!!

Good to figure out that the North Bay Leadership Council and the Chamber of Commerce are essentially redundant. It looks like the endorsements were cut and paste jobs. We can have 2/3 of more of the same-insanely botched housing elements, cutbacks in police, violation of the Brown Act, building a new $43MM city hall-all of these are the height of fiscal irresponsibility!...Vote for Leslie Peterson Schwarze..she understands fiscal prudence, she has experience, and she knows what the City needs!

I am really glad that all of the establishment groups have chosen to endorse the same three candidates. If you want everything to go in the same direction that it has been, down hill, then vote for the incumbent and endorsed candidates. If you have noticed that the quality of life in Novato is swirling around the bowl, if you have heard the illegal alien gang gunfire in the streets, if you want Sacramento and ABAG to run Novato with three council rubber stamp, then you know for whom to vote. If you want a council that actually represents the citizens of Novato then vote:
JEROME J. GHIGLIOTTI, JR. FOR NOVATO CITY COUNCIL
Remember, my signs that read: "Eliminate Illegal Alien Gangs" are being stolen, not any of the other candidates signs are being stolen. Do you think that the gangs are involved in that vandalism of democracy? I do. I could not have thought about better publicity if I had tried.

Who cares whom some group based in Petaluma thinks that we should vote for. Think local!!! Vote for Leslie Peterson Schwarze and get ready to work for a better Novato. The city council needs new exciting members and Leslie is a good start. Take some responsibility for the operation and maintenance of our town and schools.
Do not get in line and be a sheeple and vote for ho the paper tells you to vote for! Get informed on your own.

NBLC has ignored the financial ramifications of the new civic center complex. Only Eric has spoken out against it. Both incumbents voted to spend 3.5 million dollars to keep the redevelopment district open but then use the money to build a downtown civic center with no redevelopment value. It is clear that in this race the incumbents have the upper hand with established groups. I wish the Chamber and NBLC would take the time to look at what has gone wrong in the past two years to appreciate the concern of so many citizens. Our family will be supporting Leslie Peterson Schwarze for city council.

My family will be voting for Leslie Peterson Schwarze for Novato City Council.
We may be relatively new to Novato but after speaking before the Council several times I won't be voting for incumbents. Thanks but no...

I want readers of the Patch to know that I emailed Cynthia Murray and explained that I would not fill out the North Bay Leadership questionnaire and would not promote NBLC if they endorsed me. I have not sought endorsements from organizations or elected officials. I believe that the Novato City Council election should be about individual voters and what is best for the RESIDENTS of Novato. I do not want to be beholden to organizations or elected officials. Life is complicated enough without having to figure out all this behind the scenes maneuvering.
I am also NOT part of any slate of candidates. I am running alone, and the issues most important to me and my supporters are being ignored in forums and on questionnaires.

We will support Schwarze because of her common sense approach, her opposition to downtown city offices and her stance on affordable housing. Her recognition that the REAL issues confronting Novato are "being ignored in forums" and by our current council is what separates her head and shoulders above any candidate, incumbent or not.
We will support Lucan in the hopes that he follow through on his statements that he will reverse the decision to build city offices downtown. We are hopeful that he is not just "more of the same". It is a risk but he a risk worth taking when considering the incumbents.
We are torn between Ghigliotti and Sluis. Sluis is against downtown city offices, has taken a stand against SMART, & is also likeminded on slowing the affordable housing machine. Ghigliotti, although a bit abrasive, has been one to bring a lot of attention to a growing concern among Novato citizens. You may not like it but we need some focus on rising violent crime and gangs. At the very minimum cable access ratings will go through the roof with him in office.
Shake things up this election. We need people with real opinions and who will take stands. We do not need council members who spend our money without care and who are beholden to the 15 people that have nothing better to do with their time than to sit at council meetings threatening and berating those that don't agree with them.

Time for a change! It is very apparent our current city leaders have forgotten who they work for and who pays their salaries. HEY it is our tax dollars and our values that make this town the very nice place it is. My vote and the people I have talked to are voting for Leslie!

North Bay Leadership Council? Do they think it is good leadership to NOT follow The Brown Act? They endorsed two council members that did!
What kind of "Leadership Council" is this? Do they condone Brown Act violations? Do they reward bad behavior?

I will not support any group who advocates for a regional perspective when addressing community concerns. Unless this is clarified regarding Affordable Housing, regional Affordable Housing requirements can mean Novato gets more dumping on since Marin would be satisfying it's Affordable Housing requirements by having more in Novato. Novato has already taken it's fair share. Novato City Council has to change. Vote for change. Leslie Schwartz understands the issues as witnessed at Council meetings this past year. Non-speaking candidates at Council meetings offer zippo!

I agree with the sentiment here regarding the problems that this North Bay Leadership Council does not properly reflect the interest of Novato, and that the candidates mentioned have been part of the problem - as well as Toni's reminder to us all regarding their flagrant violation of the Brown Act - which is an offense to all citizens of Novato. The "usual" needs to go.

PS: Leadership? What kind of leadership allows the crime (at no fault to the NPD) to continue at The Wyndover Apartments?
Under Kellner's and MacLeamy's watch the following police reports are on the NPD police call logs---alleged allegations of the following at Wyndover:
Child Abuse
Child Sexual Abuse
Fraud
Warrants
Domestic Violence
90 year old woman reported bruised and abused
Drugs (Marin County Drug Task Force did 2 major drug busts)
Gang Beating of a 15 year old
Child Protective Service Involvement
Adult Protective Services Involvement
Animal Cruelty
Child molester arrested at Wyndover
Woman wielding an axe
Woman ate a razor blade
Noise disturbances
2 police calls at the new manager's apartment for verbal disturbances!
Male jumped out of second story window last week running away from the NPD as he had a warrant out for his arrest and broke his ankle.
Theft
Under aged girl held against her will
It just goes on and on and on.
Is this good leadership to have this crime continue? Was it good leadership to cut our police to a bare bones staff? Was it good leadership to cut ALL of our School Resource Officers so high risk children may not have anyone to turn to? How much of this crime could have been avoided with accountability with the investors/owners of The Wyndover Apartments?
It's time for hope, it's time for a change, it's time for a council who will fight for the children and the law abiding residents that live at Wyndover.

I can not imagine how bad it would be if the city allowed several more complexes, like Wyndover, into our community. This sounds like the "projects" in the big cities.

If the community had not risen up and opposed the original affordable housing site selections, it would have been a done under the leadership of Kellner and MacLeamy.
DO NOT vote for them. VOTE Leslie Schwarze and spread the word around.

During the beginning of the affordable hosuing site selections the current council tried to sweep it under the radar. They thought the community was sleeping and tried to pull a fast on on ALL OF US! Please vote three new city coucil members into office.

Let me know if anyone of you Leslie Peterson Schwarze supporters want a lawn sign or a car magnet. I have a few extra I saved in my car for kind supporters like you!
I just don't understand why the current council hasn't written one letter to the state of California or to Fairfield Residential or to the Marin County DA's Office to make Fairfield Residential (investors of Wyndover) accountable for all of the police calls and crime? Shouldn't Novato provide SAFE low income apartments? Allowing Fairfield not to pay Real Estate Taxes for 55 years, FR got state bonds to buy the building, there is no skin in the game for the slumlord. This gravy train of Fairfield Residential making millions a year off the backs of the poor and off of the hard working Novato tax payer (and allowing constant crime in their complex) must be derailed. We need a council that will hold their feet to the fire. Currently this council has chosen not to do that. Why? Why won't they protect the children that have to live amongst so much crime?
