Old Hospital Site Subject of Design Discussion

Design Review Commission to continue its review of plans for a 7.5-acre spot at Hill and Canyon roads.

Have you been wondering what’s up with vacant lot where the old Novato Community Hospital used to be? Some answers will be provided Wednesday night at a meeting of the Novato Design Review Commission.

The 7.5-acre site at the corner of Hill and Canyon roads will be the site of 25 single-family homes if developers keep the project moving through the city approval process. Plans for the so-called Canyon Green development were unanimously approved by the design board on Sept. 7, but the commission decided to delay discussion about details such as exterior home colors, colors for retaining walls and colors for metal picket fencing.

The feedback will continue at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the site, 1625 Hill Road. The developer is expected to bring a selection of color schemes to the meeting, according to a city staff report.

In 2009, the Novato City Council discussed and turned down a 30-unit development on the corner parcel. Sixteen people showed up to oppose the project and only four were in favor. The Novato Planning Commission had twice turned it down and said it should be no more than 25 units.
