Mark Calendars for Jan. 17 Novato Theater Fundraiser
Ghiringhelli's Pizzeria Grill and Bar to host a night of entertainment and donate a portion of proceeds to the renovation of the long-closed theater on Grant Avenue.
Some might believe the approved sale of the long-closed Novato Theater to a nonprofit group eyeing a renovation made it all a done deal. But more than $800,000 raised during the initial campaign was just the first test, allowing the sale from the city of Novato to the nonprofit group to proceed. The bigger fundraising job is now under way.
That’s why a Ghiringhelli’s Pizzeria Grill and Bar is to hold a fundraiser Jan. 17 to raise more cash for the campaign.
“Now we go into Phase 2, which is raising all the funds we need to do this right,” nonprofit director Bernice Baeza said on Dec. 6, the night the Novato City Council unanimously approved the sale of the theater. “That will take up all of 2012. We’d like to break ground on the inside part of the job in fall 2013.”
Fifteen percent of the cost of all food and beverages sold during the Ghiringhelli’s event will be donated to the theater renovation project.
The downtown theater at 924 Grant Ave. has been closed since 1991. With an influx of community support, it will be rebuilt as a film, performing arts and cultural center so that live music, theater and film events can have a year-round venue. Plans are to have it open every day of the year and available to rent for meetings, private events and educational outreach programming.
The major donors so far are Peggy Haas ($200,000), John & Alexandra Dickerman, Jack & Kathleen Gallivan, Keith & Christine Greggor and George & Kele Gasparini, according to the project’s official website. More than 40 individuals, couples and organizations have donated $1,000 or more and several hundred have contributed in one way or another.
Dinner service starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Jan. 17 event and entertainment begins at 7. Advanced drama students from San Marin High School, directed by Linda Kislingbury, will stage a café theater performance.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling 878-4977.

I believe 100% of the ticket sales along with 15% of the cost of all food and beverages sold will go to Novato Theater.
