Hollywood-Style Promo Videos Shot for Novato Theater Fundraising Campaign

With deadline to raise $750,000 extended to September, the media campaign is ramping up to renovate the long-closed theater on Grant Avenue.

The red carpet was rolled out Wednesday for some dapper and glamorous volunteers who turned out to take part in a promotional video shoot for the Novato Theater renovation effort.

Marin County Supervisor Judy Arnold of Novato, who secured $100,000 from the county toward the $750,000 fundraising target, smiled for the camera and made an appeal for Novato residents to write checks and help the theater — closed for 20 years — undergo a structural and aesthetic makeover.

The city originally gave the nonprofit group a June deadline to raise $750,000 in pledges to close the agreed-upon $50,000 sale of the theater. But the deadline has been extended to September and fundraising volunteers are redoubling their efforts to appeal to residents who’ve hoped the theater would reopen someday.

The crew from Novato-based Zan Media directed the cast of extras on the sidewalk outside the theater at 924 Grant Ave. Lots of cars slowed down with drivers gawking as they took a look at the dressed-up group, which included several kids and teens, fundraising committee members and people who have made significant donations. Singers from San Marin High and dancers from the Love2Dance studio gave the filming a festive backdrop and gave a taste of some of the talent that might be showcased inside the theater a few years down the line.

Bernice Baeza, who is leading the effort to purchase the theater from the city and renovate the theater, also spoke into the microphone with donor Elayne Miller as they glammed it up on the red carpet next to a vintage Jaguar convertible.

Zan Media’s Chris Scioli said videos of 30 seconds, 1 minute and 3 minutes will be made and used for promotions until the fundraising campaign ends in September.

This is a great cause! Bernice's concept will work wonders for downtown. Here is to hoping all of Novato can help get this great space reopened!

Hi Fred,

The Novato Theater renovation project is just over half-way to meeting their initial fundraising goal of $750K. The deadline has been extended until September. For the last two weeks, there's been a fundraising progress poster of a golden Oscar statue posted in one of the Novato Theater window display cases that's gradually being revealed as the donations come in. Since the successful "Sneak Preview" event held last month, interest has definitely been growing. At the Novato Farmer's Market, check-out the Novato Theater table to get any other questions answered, or go to www.novatotheater.net for more details.

I'm absolutely giddy about the prospect of a restored, multiuse theater for downtown Novato--- a community hub for all ages for. Our vibrant theater can host first run films, documentaries, sports nights, weekend matinees for children, provide dressing rooms & stage for local theater, school performances, recitals. Plus, plans include a versatile lobby for fundraisers, book-signings, meetings... possibilities are endless if citizens pull together now to open the doors and raise the curtain for us & generations to come!
